Painted in a base color, the outside is then smoked using a candle and a knife. Swirls of smoke accent the ghosts and decorate the outer sides and slip in to the inside of the lantern. To make the lantern appear to be used the smoke was left on the inside. Each lantern was then coated with a finish to prevent the soot from smearing.
